What is the difference between an acoustic piano and keyboard?
We get this question often. When should I buy a piano, and when should I buy a digital piano/keyboard? Keyboards and pianos both have their purpose. For example, if you are a travelling musician, or need something that can move from location to location easily, a keyboard is right for you! Most (if not all) travelling musicians (or musicians that have gigs in many different locations), would find that moving and setting up a keyboard is much easier. Keyboards are easy to take apart and do not require tuning every time they are moved location to location. If this sounds like your situation, you should consider buying a keyboard.
If that doesn't sound right for you, acoustic pianos (upright or grand) are the best type of piano to learn to play on. We will always recommend to buy the best acoustic your budget can allow. Used upright pianos are a great way to start playing. These pianos are low-cost and will fit in the same space as a keyboard. We recommend acoustic pianos to players of all levels because of the quality of sound and the feel of the keys. The feel of the keys is something that you can only get in an acoustic piano because digital pianos do not use actions. Many older used uprights can be suitable for beginner use, but it is always important that they have been consistently serviced and tuned. Without proper maintenance, the piano will not provide a suitable experience, as they deteriorate over time.
